Power flushing to clear sludge and cold spots
A deep clean for your heating system that gets radiators heating evenly again and takes the strain off your boiler.
Over the years, water in a central heating system picks up rust and debris from the inside of radiators and pipes. It settles as a thick black sludge that blocks radiators, starves the boiler of flow and makes the whole system work harder for less heat.
A power flush pushes water and cleaning chemicals through the system at high flow, one radiator at a time, to lift that sludge out. Once the water runs clean, David adds inhibitor to protect the system from here on.
It is often the right step before a new boiler goes in, because fitting a new boiler to a dirty system shortens its life. Most manufacturers, Worcester Bosch included, expect the system to be cleaned and treated when a new boiler is fitted. If a flush is not what your system needs, we will tell you.
What a power flush includes
- A check of the system and boiler before we start
- High-flow cleaning through the whole system, radiator by radiator
- Cleaning chemicals to loosen sludge and scale
- Dirty water flushed out until it runs clear
- Fresh water and corrosion inhibitor added
- Radiators bled and the system rebalanced
- Boiler pressure set and everything tested
Signs your system needs a flush
-
Cold at the bottom
Radiators that are warm at the top and cold at the bottom are usually full of sludge.
-
Noisy boiler or pipes
Banging or kettling sounds can mean restricted flow through the boiler heat exchanger.
-
Dirty water when you bleed
Black or brown water from a radiator valve is a clear sign of sludge in the system.
-
Slow to heat up
If the house takes longer and longer to warm up, the system may be clogged.
Power flush pricing
The price depends on the size of your system and the number of radiators, so David looks at it first and gives you a fixed price before starting.
If a simpler clean or a single radiator would sort the problem, we will say so rather than sell you a full flush.
Great service!
We struggled to find a gas engineer to fix our problems for a couple of months, everyone had issues with parts etc etc. Within hours David came out and fixed all the problems for 10% price quoted by two other engineers. We were very impressed but ultimately David just knows what hes doing. 10/10
What is a power flush?
A power flush is a deep clean of your central heating. Water and cleaning chemicals are pumped through the pipes and radiators at high flow to remove sludge, rust and scale, then the system is refilled with clean water and inhibitor.
Do I need a power flush before a new boiler?
Usually, yes, unless the system is already clean. Fitting a new boiler to a system full of sludge shortens its life, and most manufacturers expect the system to be cleaned and treated when a new boiler is fitted.
How long does a power flush take?
Most homes take most of a day, depending on how many radiators there are and how dirty the system is. David will give you an idea when he prices the job.
Will a power flush fix cold radiators?
If the cold spots are caused by sludge, it usually makes a big difference. Some cold radiators are down to balancing, valves or air instead, so David checks the cause first.
