Gas engineer in Clarkston

A hundred years ago most of Clarkston was farmland. The railway arrived in 1866, the trams followed in 1921, and over the next two decades the fields around Stamperland, Carolside and Williamwood filled with semis and bungalows. Those houses have been through a lot of boilers since, and a good share of the ones we see now are working harder than they were ever meant to, because the families inside them have grown, extended and added bathrooms.

Crombie Gas is a family business based in Uddingston, and the engineer who turns up is David Crombie. He has spent more than 27 years in gas and heating, 20 of them with British Gas, before going self-employed so he could look after people properly rather than racing through a job sheet. Most of our work now comes from customers who have used us before, or from someone they told.

In Clarkston that usually means one of three things: a boiler that keeps cutting out, an annual service that keeps a manufacturer warranty alive, or a family deciding whether their old combi can still cope. David will look at the repair first and only talk about replacement when it genuinely makes more sense. You get a price for parts and labour before any work starts.

We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Areas of Clarkston we cover

We cover the whole of Clarkston, from the shops along Busby Road and around Sheddens out to the 1920s streets of Stamperland and the slightly later houses of Carolside and Williamwood. Overlee and the Fairfield homes off Eaglesham Road are on the list too, as is the stretch near Clarkston station and Mearns Road. If you are on the edge of Busby or Netherlee and not sure if you count, just ask. The drive from Uddingston is short enough that it rarely matters.

Interwar semis that have outgrown their heating

Much of Clarkston was built in the 1920s and 1930s, so the typical house is a semi-detached villa or bungalow with solid proportions and plenty of room to grow. Plenty have grown: dormer and loft conversions, kitchen extensions, a second shower room. The heating rarely keeps pace. We often find radiators added to the end of a pipe run that was sized for a much smaller house, so the new rooms never quite warm up.

The other common story is a combi fitted years ago when the children were small. A combi suits one bathroom well, but with teenagers and two showers running at once the flow drops and tempers rise. Sometimes the answer is simply a better-sized combi. In other homes a system boiler with a stored hot water cylinder fits better. David will look at your water pressure, your bathrooms and how you actually live, then tell you which makes sense.

I found Crombie gas by chance when I needed my boiler replaced and it was a lucky find. David is the most reliable, efficient and skilled gas engineer I have experienced. I have recommend Crombie Gas to family and friends who have also been delighted. David operates with high integrity and only quotes for work that is required and gives competitively priced options.

Questions

Gas engineer in Clarkston: your questions

We have converted our loft in Stamperland. Will our boiler cope?

Possibly, but it depends on the boiler's output, the pipe sizes and how the new radiators were connected. A loft conversion adds heat loss and sometimes a bathroom too. David can look at what you have, run the numbers and tell you honestly whether a bigger radiator, a rebalanced system or a different boiler is needed. Often the fix is smaller than people fear.

Should we swap our combi for a system boiler now we have two bathrooms?

Not automatically. A combi heats water on demand, so two showers at once can struggle, especially if the mains flow into the house is modest. A system boiler with a cylinder handles simultaneous use better but needs space for the tank. We check your mains pressure and flow first, then advise on which suits your Clarkston home. No hard sell either way.

How long does it take you to get to Clarkston?

From our base in Uddingston it is usually a 20 to 25 minute drive outside rush hour, so Clarkston sits comfortably within our regular area. We are open seven days, 8am to 8pm, and we will give you a clear idea of when David can call when you get in touch.

Does my house need a carbon monoxide alarm?

Yes. Since February 2022 every home in Scotland, owned or rented, needs a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed fuel-burning appliance such as a gas boiler or fire, or a flue. It should be sealed battery or mains powered. David will check you have one when he services the boiler and let you know if it is missing.
