Gas engineer in Giffnock
David Crombie spent twenty years in a British Gas van, and plenty of those days were spent in houses a lot like Giffnock's. When he went self-employed, the idea was simple: same engineer every time, honest advice, and enough time on each job to do it properly. More than 27 years into the trade, that is still how Crombie Gas works.
Giffnock asks a fair bit of a heating engineer. Victorian merchants built villas here for the clean air and the train into Glasgow, and the town kept growing between the wars with bungalows and semis. So one street might have a big sandstone house with high ceilings and a heating system that has been altered four times, and the next has a compact 1930s bungalow that just needs a reliable boiler and a sensible service. We are comfortable with both.
Whatever the house, the approach does not change. David finds the fault, explains it in plain English, and gives you a price for parts and labour before anything is done. If the boiler can be repaired at a fair cost, he will say so. Most of our customers come back to us year after year, or were sent by a neighbour who did.
Crombie Gas is Gas Safe registered (540372), family-run from Uddingston, and open seven days, 8am to 8pm.
Areas of Giffnock we cover
Our Giffnock work stretches from the Merrylee end, with its run of Merry-named streets, through Orchard Park and the shops and station around Fenwick Road. We are regularly south towards Rouken Glen Park and Davieland, and around Eastwood Park, where some of the larger older houses sit. If your address straddles Giffnock and Thornliebank or Whitecraigs, that is no problem at all. David knows the area well and the trip across from Uddingston is an easy one.

New boilers in Giffnock
We are a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in Giffnock, which lets us offer extended manufacturer guarantees on eligible Worcester boilers. In an older villa we look hard at the existing pipework and cylinder before recommending anything, and we also fit Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera. You get the full price up front.

Manufacturers expect a yearly service to keep the warranty valid, so we remind you when yours is due. On older Giffnock systems David also keeps an eye on sludge, pressure and the condition of the flue, and he will tell you straight if something is close to the end of its life.

Big houses tend to show faults as cold rooms, banging pipes or a boiler that cannot hold pressure. David traces the actual cause rather than swapping parts in hope, then gives you a price for the repair before he starts. Replacement only comes up if repair genuinely is not worth it.
More about boiler repairLandlord certificates in Giffnock
If you let a flat or house in Giffnock, the law requires a gas safety check every year under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. We test every appliance and flue, issue the landlord gas safety record (CP12), and send a reminder so the next one is never missed.

Giffnock's older villas are lovely homes and awkward ones to heat. High ceilings, big bay windows and long pipe runs mean a lot of water to move around, and some still carry traces of an old open-vented system: a feed and expansion tank in the loft, a hot water cylinder in a cupboard, pipework rerouted by several owners. Sludge builds up in that sort of system, so cold radiators and noisy boilers are common. A proper clean and the right inhibitor often make a real difference before anyone talks about a new boiler.
The 1930s bungalows and semis around Orchard Park and Merrylee are simpler, but many have had loft rooms added since. When the time does come to replace, the choice between a combi, a system boiler or keeping a heat-only boiler with a cylinder depends on your water pressure and how many bathrooms you run. David will talk it through honestly.
Great service!
We struggled to find a gas engineer to fix our problems for a couple of months, everyone had issues with parts etc etc. Within hours David came out and fixed all the problems for 10% price quoted by two other engineers. We were very impressed but ultimately David just knows what hes doing. 10/10
Gas engineer in Giffnock: your questions
Our villa still has a tank in the loft. Do we have to change the whole system?
Not necessarily. Open-vented systems with a loft tank can run well for years if they are kept clean and the tank is in good order. Converting to a sealed system or a combi can free up space and improve hot water pressure, but older pipework needs checking first. David will look at what you have in your Giffnock home and give you the options without pushing either one.
Why are the radiators in our big rooms only warm at the top?
Cold at the bottom usually means sludge, the magnetite and debris that collect in older systems. In a large Giffnock house with long pipe runs it can also be a balancing issue. David will check which it is. A system clean, a filter and fresh inhibitor often bring the heat back, and they also protect a new boiler if you are planning one.
Is it worth repairing a boiler that is over ten years old?
Sometimes, yes. Age alone is not the deciding factor: what matters is the fault, the cost and availability of the part, and the general state of the boiler. David will price the repair and tell you honestly if he thinks the money would be better put towards a replacement. Plenty of older boilers in Giffnock are still worth keeping going.
Do you service makes other than Worcester Bosch?
Yes. Worcester Bosch is our lead brand and we are accredited installers, but David services and repairs Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers too, along with many older models found in Giffnock homes. Tell us the make and model when you get in touch and we will confirm.
