Gas engineer in Newton Mearns

Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and everybody wanting a hot shower at half seven. That is a normal weekday morning in a lot of Newton Mearns homes, and it is the reason heating here is a bit different from the rest of our patch. Get the boiler and hot water set-up right and nobody thinks about it. Get it wrong and someone is always last in the queue with a lukewarm shower.

Crombie Gas is a small, family-run firm from Uddingston. David Crombie does the work himself, drawing on more than 27 years in gas and heating, including 20 with British Gas. He went out on his own to give people the kind of attention a big company rarely has time for, and that is why most of our jobs now come through repeat customers and recommendations.

Our advice is the same whatever it costs us: repair first if repair is sensible, a fixed price for parts and labour before any work begins, and no sales patter. If your system boiler, cylinder or combi needs attention in Newton Mearns, David will explain what is going on and what your real options are.

We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and work seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Areas of Newton Mearns we cover

Newton Mearns covers a lot of ground and we work right across it. In the north east that means Whitecraigs, Kirkhill and the established houses of the Broom estate near Ayr Road. Further in are Crookfur and Mearns Cross, then Westacres and Greenlaw towards the M77, Capelrig and Patterton to the north west, and Mearnskirk and the newer streets of Maidenhill on the southern side. Wherever you are in G77, David can usually fit you in without much fuss.

Local homes

From 1930s Broom villas to new-build executive homes

Newton Mearns has grown in waves. Mactaggart and Mickel's Broom estate went up in the 1930s, building picked up again from the 1950s, and large detached family homes have followed on estates ever since, right up to the current phases at Maidenhill. The result is a mix of characterful older houses and big modern homes with several en-suites.

Multiple bathrooms are the key heating question. A combi heats water as you use it, so two or three showers at once will outrun it. Many larger homes here run a system boiler with an unvented hot water cylinder instead, which stores mains-pressure hot water for the whole house. Those cylinders have safety valves and expansion components that need regular checks by a suitably qualified engineer, and we will advise you on what yours needs.

Newer homes bring a different worry: keeping manufacturer warranties valid with a proper annual service.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Newton Mearns: your questions

Can a combi boiler run three bathrooms in Newton Mearns?

It can run them, but not usually all at once. A combi's hot water depends on its output and on the mains flow into your house. In homes with three bathrooms and busy mornings, a system boiler with a stored cylinder is often the better fit. David will measure your incoming water and talk through how your household uses hot water before recommending either.

Our new-build came with a boiler warranty. Do we still need a service?

Almost certainly. Most manufacturers make the warranty conditional on a yearly service by a Gas Safe registered engineer, with the paperwork to prove it. Miss one and a later claim can be refused. We service new-build boilers across Newton Mearns, including Worcester, Vaillant and Ideal models, and send a reminder each year so it does not get forgotten.

Our hot water cylinder is dripping from a pipe outside. Is that serious?

Water coming from a discharge or overflow pipe often means a valve on an unvented cylinder or a pressure part is not doing its job, so it is worth getting looked at soon rather than left. Give us a call, describe what you see, and David will advise on the next step and who needs to look at it.

Do you cover the older houses in the Broom estate?

Yes. The 1930s houses around Broom and Whitecraigs are a regular part of our work, and they often have heating that has been extended or altered over the years. David is used to tracing pipework that has had several owners' worth of changes, and he will give you honest options for repairing or upgrading what is there.
