Gas engineer in Glasgow's West End

We will be honest from the start: the West End is one of the further areas we cover. Depending on traffic it takes us 25 to 30 minutes from Uddingston, so we plan West End visits properly rather than squeezing them between other jobs. What you get in return is an experienced engineer who takes the time a tenement or townhouse heating system needs.

That engineer is David Crombie. He has more than 27 years in gas and heating, including 20 with British Gas, and runs Crombie Gas as a family business. Most of our work comes from repeat customers and word of mouth, and the West End is no different: people tend to hear about us from someone they know. David would rather spend an extra half hour getting a tricky tenement system right than rush off to the next job.

We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in the West End, and we also work on Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers. Repair is always considered before replacement, every job is priced before we start, and we answer the phone 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Areas of Glasgow West End we cover

Our West End area runs from Woodlands and the streets near Kelvingrove Park out through Hillhead and the university, and on to Dowanhill, Hyndland and Kelvinside. Partick and Thornwood near the river are included, as is Broomhill further west. That covers most of the G3, G11 and G12 postcode districts. If you are in Kelvindale, Jordanhill or Finnieston, ask us and we will tell you honestly whether we can fit you in.

Local homes

Sandstone tenements and grand townhouses

Most West End homes date from the Victorian and Edwardian years. Partick, Thornwood, Hyndland and Woodlands are dominated by sandstone tenements, while Dowanhill, Kelvinside and parts of Hillhead have terraces and large townhouses, many of them now divided into flats. Much of the area lies within conservation areas.

These buildings are handsome but demanding to heat. High ceilings, big bay windows and solid stone walls mean high heat loss, so radiators need sizing properly and the boiler can be working hard on a cold day. In townhouses, pipe runs to the top floor can be long and tricky to balance. In tenement flats, the challenge is often where the boiler and flue can go, since flue positions on a front elevation may need extra thought in a conservation area, and condensate pipes running down outside walls are prone to freezing.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Glasgow West End: your questions

How long does it take you to get to the West End?

From our base in Uddingston it is usually 25 to 30 minutes outside rush hour, and longer at busy times. We are upfront about that because it is further than most of the areas we cover. It means we tend to book West End visits in advance, so let us know early and we will find a time that suits you.

Can a combi boiler work in a tenement flat?

In most tenement flats, yes, and a combi is usually the space-saving choice. The questions are where the boiler can sit, how the flue can exit and where the condensate pipe will run. Some positions are limited by the building itself or by conservation area rules. David will look at all of this on a survey before recommending anything.

Our townhouse top floor is always cold. Is the boiler too small?

It may be, but often the boiler is not the problem. Long pipe runs, radiators too small for big rooms with high ceilings, or a system that has never been balanced can all starve the upper floors of heat. David will check output, circulation and controls, then tell you honestly whether the fix lies in the system or the boiler.

Do you do gas safety certificates for student lets?

Yes. Landlords of student flats need the same annual gas safety check as any other let, and a copy of the record must go to the tenants. We test each gas appliance, check flues and ventilation, and issue the CP12. If it makes life easier, we can arrange the visit directly with your tenants.
