Gas engineer in Viewpark

From our base in Uddingston, Viewpark is about five minutes away, so it is one of the areas we know best. Many of the homes here were built in a short space of time from the late 1950s, which means a lot of them share the same layouts, the same cupboard where the boiler lives and, often, the same niggles when it gets older.

That familiarity helps. When David Crombie walks into a house off Laburnum Road, he usually has a good idea where the pipes run and what the options are before he has opened the toolbag. He has been in gas and heating for more than 27 years, including 20 at British Gas, and he set up Crombie Gas to give people a more personal service than a big firm can.

We replace and install boilers, carry out annual services, fix breakdowns and issue landlord gas safety certificates. As a Worcester Bosch accredited installer serving Viewpark, we can offer extended manufacturer guarantees on eligible Worcester boilers, and we also look after Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera models.

There is no sales pitch. You get an honest view, a price for parts and labour before anything starts, and a repair where a repair will do the job.

Areas of Viewpark we cover

We work right across Viewpark, from the long run of Laburnum Road and the streets built off it to Birkenshaw and the homes along Old Edinburgh Road. We also cover Tannochside and Fallside, which sit alongside Viewpark in North Lanarkshire and share the Uddingston G71 postcode. Locals still call the post-war estate "the Scheme", and between them those streets make up a big share of our work on this side of the motorway.

Post-war scheme houses and what goes wrong with them

Much of Viewpark was built as council housing from the late 1950s into the early 1960s, much of it for mining families and workers at the nearby factories. Many of those homes are now privately owned and have been modernised at different times, so two houses side by side can have very different heating setups.

The original solid fuel and back boiler arrangements have mostly gone, but we still come across the odd back boiler behind a fireplace, and a few houses still have the old tank-fed system in the loft. When converting to a combi, the main questions are where the boiler and flue can go and whether the pipework is sized for the job. Condensate pipes running down an outside wall are another local favourite, because they freeze on hard winter mornings and stop the boiler from firing.

Great service!

We struggled to find a gas engineer to fix our problems for a couple of months, everyone had issues with parts etc etc. Within hours David came out and fixed all the problems for 10% price quoted by two other engineers. We were very impressed but ultimately David just knows what hes doing. 10/10

Questions

Gas engineer in Viewpark: your questions

We still have an old back boiler behind the fire. Can it be replaced?

Yes. Removing a back boiler usually means fitting a modern combi or system boiler in a new spot, often a kitchen or hall cupboard, and making safe the old fireplace connection. David will look at where the new flue and pipework can run, explain the work involved and give you a clear price before anything is decided.

Our condensate pipe keeps freezing in winter. What can be done?

It is a common problem when the pipe runs a long way outside. The fix is usually to reroute more of it indoors, increase the pipe size where it is exposed or insulate it properly. In the meantime, pouring warm (not boiling) water over the frozen section often frees it. We can sort it properly at your next service or repair visit.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm near my boiler?

In Scotland, every home with a carbon-fuelled appliance such as a gas boiler or fire, or a flue running through it, must have a carbon monoxide alarm. It does not need to be linked to your smoke alarms. If you are unsure where yours should go, ask David during a service and he will point out a sensible spot.

Can my existing radiators stay when I get a new boiler?

Usually, yes. Many Viewpark radiators have plenty of life left, and keeping them reduces the cost of a new boiler. We clean the system so old sludge does not damage the new boiler. If a radiator is badly corroded or undersized for the room, David will point it out so you can decide.
