Gas engineer in Rutherglen

Rutherglen sits just over the Clyde from Glasgow but answers to South Lanarkshire, and from our base in Uddingston it is one of the closest towns we cover. A run along the M74 has David at most Rutherglen doors in about a quarter of an hour, which makes it a natural part of our patch rather than a stretch.

Crombie Gas is a small family business. David Crombie has spent more than 27 years in gas and heating, 20 of them with British Gas, before going out on his own so he could look after people properly instead of racing between jobs. Most of our work still comes from customers we have helped before and the neighbours they tell about us.

What that means in practice is simple. David looks at the boiler himself, tells you plainly what he thinks is wrong, and gives you a price for parts and labour before any work begins. If a repair makes sense, that is what he will recommend. A new boiler only comes up when it genuinely is the better option, and you will hear why.

We are Gas Safe registered (number 540372) and open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm, for installations, annual servicing, breakdowns and landlord gas safety certificates across G73.

Areas of Rutherglen we cover

We cover the whole of Rutherglen, from the sandstone flats around Main Street and the streets near the Cross, out through Stonelaw and up the hill into Burnside and High Crosshill. Further south we work in Spittal, Bankhead and Fernhill, and right up to Cathkin on the edge of the braes. If your address starts G73, you are on our regular route, and we are just as happy to call into the older closes near the town centre as the newer houses towards the bypass.

Local homes

Rutherglen homes and the heating they need

Rutherglen is an old royal burgh, and its housing shows the layers. Main Street and the roads leading off it are lined with grey and red sandstone tenements put up in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when the little cottages that once stood there were cleared. Climb towards Burnside and the houses get bigger, with villas and semis on quieter streets, then give way to council-built estates in places like Spittal, Fernhill and Bankhead.

Each type brings its own jobs. In a tenement flat the boiler is usually a combi tucked into a kitchen cupboard, and the flue route and condensate pipe matter more than people expect, especially when an outside condensate run freezes in January. Larger Burnside houses can have more radiators than an older boiler copes with comfortably. In the ex-council homes, we often meet boilers that were fitted in a bulk upgrade years ago and are now due a careful look.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Rutherglen: your questions

Rutherglen is in South Lanarkshire, is it still in your area?

Yes. Council boundaries make no difference to us. Rutherglen is one of the nearest towns to our Uddingston base, about 15 minutes away off-peak, and we have worked across G73 for years. Burnside, Spittal, Fernhill, Cathkin and the town centre are all regular stops for David.

My tenement boiler keeps losing pressure, is it worth repairing?

Often it is. Pressure loss usually comes from a small leak on the system, a tired pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel that needs recharging, and none of those automatically mean a new boiler. David will find the cause, explain it and price the fix first. If replacement really is the better choice, he will tell you why.

Can you replace an old boiler and tank setup in a Burnside house with a combi?

In many homes, yes, but it depends on how many bathrooms you have and the water pressure coming into the house. A combi suits a lot of family homes well, while a busier household may be better with a system boiler and cylinder. David will look at the property and talk you through both options honestly.

Do you send someone different each time?

No. Crombie Gas is a family business and David does the work himself. That is the whole reason he left British Gas after 20 years: so customers deal with the same person who knows their boiler, rather than whoever happens to be free that day.
