Gas engineer in Stepps

Stepps is easy to miss from the M80, but it is a proper village with a character of its own: the older streets near the church on Whitehill Avenue, the station on the Cumbernauld line, and Cardowan next door, which grew up around the colliery. It sits just outside the Glasgow boundary in North Lanarkshire, and it is a regular stop for us.

Behind Crombie Gas is David Crombie, a heating engineer with more than 27 years in the trade. He spent 20 of those with British Gas before going out on his own, because he wanted to look after customers properly rather than rush between jobs on someone else's schedule. Much of our work now comes from returning customers and their recommendations.

Whatever the job, we start by explaining what we find. If a repair is the sensible answer, that is what we suggest, and every job is priced, parts and labour, before work begins. We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer for Stepps and the surrounding villages, and we also fit and repair Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera. We are available 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm, and the drive from Uddingston takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Areas of Stepps we cover

We cover all of Stepps, from the older streets around Whitehill Avenue and Cumbernauld Road to the newer estates on the edge of the village. Cardowan, built up around the former colliery and extended with more housing after it closed, is included, as is Millerston on the Glasgow side. We also travel on to Muirhead and Chryston a little further out. Stepps and Cardowan fall under the G33 postcode, while Muirhead and Chryston are in G69.

Local homes

Victorian villas, colliery-era homes and newer estates

Stepps grew up after the railway arrived in the 1830s, and some of its Victorian and Edwardian houses still stand near the older heart of the village. These solid stone homes usually have generous rooms and high ceilings, and many have had their heating upgraded piecemeal over the decades, so it is common to find a modern boiler running on much older pipework.

Cardowan is different again. Its oldest surviving homes date from the late 1930s and early 1940s, more followed in the 1950s and 1960s, and newer private housing has since gone up on and around the old colliery land. In the older houses we look closely at radiator sizing and how clean the system is, while on the newer estates the main job is usually keeping a modern combi or system boiler serviced and within its warranty.

I found Crombie gas by chance when I needed my boiler replaced and it was a lucky find. David is the most reliable, efficient and skilled gas engineer I have experienced. I have recommend Crombie Gas to family and friends who have also been delighted. David operates with high integrity and only quotes for work that is required and gives competitively priced options.

Questions

Gas engineer in Stepps: your questions

Stepps is in North Lanarkshire. Do you still cover it?

Yes. Council boundaries make no difference to us. Stepps, Cardowan, Muirhead and Chryston are all within our usual area, and the drive from our base in Uddingston takes about 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour. Millerston, just inside the Glasgow boundary, is covered too. Give us your address and we will confirm.

Our old house has a modern boiler but some rooms never warm up. Why?

In older stone houses the boiler is often much newer than the pipework and radiators it feeds. Sludge, undersized radiators or an unbalanced system can leave rooms cool even with a good boiler. Cleaning the system, balancing it and sometimes fitting a larger radiator in the worst room usually help. David will tell you which of these is worth doing and what it costs.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm in the room with my boiler?

In Scotland, yes. Since February 2022 every home must have a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fuel-burning appliance such as a gas boiler or gas fire. It should be a sealed long-life battery alarm or one wired into the mains. If you are not sure yours is in the right place, David can advise when he visits.

Can you service a boiler someone else installed?

Of course. We service and repair Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers regardless of who fitted them. If your boiler is still under warranty, check the manufacturer's terms, but in general the annual service can be carried out by any Gas Safe registered engineer, and we will complete the service record for you.
