Gas engineer in Blantyre

Blantyre sits just across the Clyde from us, a short drive over the river from our base in Uddingston. It is a town of distinct parts: Low Blantyre and Stonefield, which grew up around the old pits, the big estates at Coatshill, High Blantyre on the hill, and the newer homes built on the western side over the last decade or so.

Crombie Gas is run by David Crombie, who has worked in gas and heating for more than 27 years. Twenty of those were with British Gas. He went self-employed so he could look after people properly, without targets or a script, and that approach has built a business that runs mainly on repeat customers and recommendations.

In Blantyre we fit and replace boilers, carry out annual services, repair breakdowns and complete landlord gas safety checks. We are a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in Blantyre, which lets us offer extended manufacturer guarantees on eligible Worcester boilers, and we also work on Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera.

Before any job starts, you know the price for parts and labour. If your boiler can be repaired sensibly, David will tell you, even when a new one would be the bigger job for us.

Areas of Blantyre we cover

We work all over Blantyre. That covers Low Blantyre near the David Livingstone Birthplace, the town centre streets around Stonefield and the Clydeview Shopping Centre, and the old mining communities at Auchinraith and Larkfield. Up the hill we cover High Blantyre and the large Coatshill estate beside it, the newer Greenhall Village development on the western side, and the homes spread across the upper slopes at Auchentibber.

From mining-era streets to brand new estates

Blantyre's housing has grown in layers. Around Low Blantyre and Stonefield there are older properties that started life in the mining era, many altered several times since, with pipework and radiators of very different ages. The larger estates such as Coatshill are mainly family houses where a combi in the kitchen or a hall cupboard is the usual setup.

At the other end of the scale, the newer homes at Greenhall Village and elsewhere usually have modern condensing boilers still within their manufacturer guarantee, and some have system boilers with a cylinder. The higher ground at High Blantyre and Auchentibber is more exposed in winter, and a condensate pipe running a long way down an outside wall is more likely to freeze there than in a sheltered street.

I found Crombie gas by chance when I needed my boiler replaced and it was a lucky find. David is the most reliable, efficient and skilled gas engineer I have experienced. I have recommend Crombie Gas to family and friends who have also been delighted. David operates with high integrity and only quotes for work that is required and gives competitively priced options.

Questions

Gas engineer in Blantyre: your questions

We are up the hill in Blantyre and the boiler stops on frosty mornings. Why?

The most likely cause is a frozen condensate pipe. Condensing boilers drain water through it, and on exposed ground a long outside run can freeze solid, which shuts the boiler down. Pouring warm water over the pipe usually frees it. A permanent fix means rerouting it indoors or using larger, insulated pipe, which David can sort out.

We have a newer house at Greenhall Village. Who should service the boiler?

Any Gas Safe registered engineer can, and it does not have to be the original developer's contractor. What matters for your manufacturer guarantee is that the service is done every year and recorded. We service Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers and send you a reminder each year.

What does a landlord gas safety check involve?

We check every gas appliance and flue in the property, test for safe operation and gas tightness, and record the results on a CP12 gas safety record. Landlords must have this done every year and give tenants a copy. Scottish rules also require a carbon monoxide alarm where there is a gas appliance, so we will mention it if one is missing.

Do you come out to Blantyre at weekends?

Yes. We are open seven days a week, from 8am to 8pm, so evenings and weekends are available for quotes, services and repairs. Call us, tell us what is going on and we will arrange a time that suits you.
