Gas engineer in Shettleston

Shettleston came close to being cleared in the 1960s and 70s. Instead, the renewal work that followed from the late 1970s concentrated on repairing its tenements rather than flattening them, which is why Shettleston Road still has its sandstone frontages today, with interwar council streets, a 1930s scheme at Sandyhills and postwar towers spreading out behind.

That spread of building ages is why a local gas engineer has to be comfortable with everything from a tank-fed system in a cottage flat to a combi squeezed into a tenement press. David Crombie has been doing exactly that for over 27 years. After two decades at British Gas, he started Crombie Gas in Uddingston, a short drive to the south-east, so customers could deal with one person they get to know.

We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and work as a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in Shettleston, with extended manufacturer guarantees available on eligible Worcester boilers, as well as servicing and repairing Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera. You always get honest advice and a price for parts and labour before we begin, and if a repair will do the job, we will tell you. We are here from 8am to 8pm, every day of the week.

Areas of Shettleston we cover

Our Shettleston customers are spread right across G32: the tenements and shops along Shettleston Road, the interwar streets of Carntyne to the north, and Springboig and Greenfield on the eastern side. We also cover Sandyhills, with its 1930s houses and later blocks near the park and golf course, and the streets around Eastbank Academy. From Uddingston it is usually about 15 minutes off-peak to most of these areas, which makes Shettleston one of our regular stops.

Local homes

From cottage flats to restored tenements

Carntyne was built between the wars to rehouse families from the crowded inner city, and its four-in-a-block cottage flats are some of the most common homes we see around Shettleston. Many began life with a back boiler or a tank-fed open-vented system, and some still have one. Switching to a modern combi or system boiler frees up space and gets rid of the old cold water tank.

The tenements along Shettleston Road and its side streets were largely repaired rather than replaced, so original stonework and close layouts survive. Flue routes were often set during that refurbishment, and the boiler is usually in a kitchen or hall cupboard. In the multi-storey and low-rise blocks around Sandyhills, heating arrangements differ from block to block and not every block has a gas supply, so we always check what is actually installed before quoting.

I found Crombie gas by chance when I needed my boiler replaced and it was a lucky find. David is the most reliable, efficient and skilled gas engineer I have experienced. I have recommend Crombie Gas to family and friends who have also been delighted. David operates with high integrity and only quotes for work that is required and gives competitively priced options.

Questions

Gas engineer in Shettleston: your questions

Can you take out an old back boiler in a Carntyne cottage flat?

Yes, it is a job we know well. Removing a back boiler means draining the system, safely disconnecting the old gas supply, dealing with the old flue and fitting a new boiler elsewhere, usually in a kitchen cupboard. David will look at where the new boiler and flue can sensibly go and price the whole job before you decide anything.

Will I still need the water tank if I switch to a combi?

Usually not. A combi heats water directly from the mains, so the cold water storage tank and hot water cylinder can normally come out. Whether a combi suits your home depends on your mains water pressure and how many people use hot water at once, and David checks both before recommending anything.

Do you cover Sandyhills, Springboig and Carntyne as well?

Yes. We cover all of Shettleston and the areas around it, including Sandyhills, Springboig, Greenfield and Carntyne. Uddingston is about 15 minutes away off-peak, and we work from 8am to 8pm seven days a week, so evenings and weekends are usually possible if you are at work during the day.

My boiler is old but still working. Should I replace it?

Not necessarily. If it is safe, reliable and parts are still available, there is often no reason to change it. At each service David will tell you honestly how it is doing. If replacement starts to make sense, for example because it keeps breaking down or parts have dried up, he will explain why and price it for you.
