Gas engineer in Dennistoun

Dennistoun was planned in the 1850s as a suburb of grand villas, but demand for flats soon took over, and the result is the streets of sandstone tenements climbing from Duke Street up towards Alexandra Parade. After the war those buildings were refurbished rather than knocked down, so many flats have been modernised several times over, and the heating inside them can be a patchwork of different decades.

That is where experience counts. David Crombie, who runs Crombie Gas from Uddingston, has worked in gas and heating for over 27 years, 20 of them with British Gas. He set up on his own to give customers a more personal service, and most of what we do now comes through people who have used us before or heard about us from a neighbour.

We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer serving Dennistoun, which means extended manufacturer guarantees are available on eligible Worcester boilers. We also work on Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera. Before any job starts you get a price for parts and labour, and if a repair makes more sense than a new boiler, that is what David will recommend. We are open 7 days, 8am to 8pm.

Areas of Dennistoun we cover

We cover all of Dennistoun, from the tenement streets running uphill between Duke Street and Alexandra Parade to the older planned streets around Craigpark and Golfhill on the western side. Haghill and the area around Whitehill are part of our patch too, as are the flats near Alexandra Park. Dennistoun is usually around 20 minutes from our base in Uddingston off-peak, and it sits right next to Parkhead and the other east end districts where we work regularly.

Local homes

Victorian tenements and the heat they need

Most homes here are flats in sandstone tenements from the late 1800s, with tall ceilings, large bay windows and thick stone walls. They look solid, but they take a lot of energy to warm, so radiator sizing and boiler output matter more than they would in a modern flat. Boilers tend to live in a hall cupboard or the kitchen, and when one sits a long way from an outside wall, the flue route needs real thought.

Part of Dennistoun is a designated conservation area, so a new flue terminal on a street-facing wall should never be assumed. Wherever we can, we keep flues to the rear of the building. We also come across older open-vented systems with a tank squeezed into a cupboard, and plenty of combis fitted during refurbishments years ago that are now reaching the end of their working life.

Great service!

We struggled to find a gas engineer to fix our problems for a couple of months, everyone had issues with parts etc etc. Within hours David came out and fixed all the problems for 10% price quoted by two other engineers. We were very impressed but ultimately David just knows what hes doing. 10/10

Questions

Gas engineer in Dennistoun: your questions

Can my flue come out the front of a Dennistoun tenement?

Sometimes, but it is rarely the first choice. Part of Dennistoun is a conservation area, and owners and factors usually prefer flues on the rear wall facing the back court. If a front position really is the only option, it is worth checking with your factor and the council first. David will look at every route available and talk you through them.

My radiators never warm the big rooms. Is the boiler to blame?

Not always. Tenement rooms with high ceilings lose a lot of heat, and radiators that are too small, sludge in the system or poor balancing are common culprits. David can check the boiler output and how the system is set up, then tell you honestly whether a repair, a system clean or a larger radiator is the better answer.

Do you work in Haghill and the flats around Alexandra Park?

Yes. We cover the whole of Dennistoun and the streets around it, including Haghill and the area near Alexandra Park. We are based in Uddingston, roughly 20 minutes away off-peak, and we are open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm, so evening and weekend visits can usually be arranged if you are out at work during the day.

Is an older combi from a past refurbishment worth repairing?

It depends on the fault, the model and whether parts are still made. Many older boilers are well worth repairing, and David will always look at that first. If a boiler is unsafe, keeps failing or parts are no longer available, he will say so plainly and give you a price for a replacement so you can compare the two.
