Gas engineer serving Tollcross

Of all the Glasgow neighbourhoods we work in, Tollcross is one of the closest to home. Our base in Uddingston is 10 to 15 minutes away, which makes Tollcross Road, Lilybank and the streets around the park part of our everyday patch rather than a trip into the city.

Crombie Gas is run by David Crombie, who has spent more than 27 years in gas and heating. He did 20 of those years with British Gas before going it alone, because he wanted customers to deal with the same person from the first phone call to the finished job. That approach has served us well, and most of our work now comes from repeat customers and word of mouth.

We are Gas Safe registered under number 540372 and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in Tollcross, able to offer extended manufacturer guarantees on eligible Worcester boilers. We also work on Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera. Expect plain advice with no sales pitch, a price for parts and labour before anything starts, and a repair wherever a repair is the right call. Phone lines and visits run from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.

Areas of Tollcross we cover

We cover Tollcross from end to end: the tenements and shops along Tollcross Road, the streets either side of Tollcross Park, and the Lilybank estate to the south. Braidfauld and Auchenshuggle, between Tollcross Road and London Road, are on our list too, along with the newer housing on the old Fullarton steelworks land and the Wellshot area towards Shettleston. Being so close to Uddingston, these are some of the easiest visits we make.

Local homes

A weaving village that grew into the city

Tollcross began as a small weaving village and only became part of Glasgow in 1912, so its housing arrived in layers. Sandstone tenements line Tollcross Road, there are estates such as Lilybank, and more recent homes stand on land once taken up by the Fullarton steelworks. Even Tollcross House, beside the park, was converted into flats in 1989.

Each layer has its own heating story. Tenement flats here often have a combi in a hall or kitchen cupboard with the flue cut through solid stone. Older estate homes can still have tank-fed systems, or the leftovers of an old back boiler arrangement. The newer houses usually have condensing boilers, some now old enough to need parts, and their condensate pipes are worth insulating or rerouting before a cold snap freezes them solid.

Great service!

We struggled to find a gas engineer to fix our problems for a couple of months, everyone had issues with parts etc etc. Within hours David came out and fixed all the problems for 10% price quoted by two other engineers. We were very impressed but ultimately David just knows what hes doing. 10/10

Questions

Gas engineer in Tollcross: your questions

Why use an Uddingston gas engineer for a Tollcross home?

Mainly because we are close. Uddingston is 10 to 15 minutes away off-peak, so Tollcross is part of our regular area. You deal with David directly, the same engineer each time, rather than whoever a large company happens to send. Most of our customers come back to us when the next service or repair is due.

Why does my condensate pipe freeze in cold weather?

Condensing boilers drain water through a plastic pipe, and where that pipe runs outside, especially on an exposed wall, it can freeze in a hard frost and lock the boiler out. Pouring warm, not boiling, water over the pipe can free it. For a lasting fix, David can reroute it inside or fit a larger, insulated pipe.

My radiators are cold at the top. What does that mean?

Usually it is air in the system, and bleeding the radiator will let it out. If the air keeps coming back, it can point to a leak, a pressure problem or corrosion inside the system. David can check the pressure, look for the underlying cause and tell you whether a simple fix or a system clean is needed.

Do you replace boilers in the newer houses near Fullarton?

Yes. Depending on when your house was built, the original boiler may now be getting on. If yours is giving trouble, David will first see whether it can be repaired at a sensible cost. If replacement is the better option, he can fit a Worcester Bosch with an extended guarantee where eligible, or another brand if you prefer.
