Gas engineer in Cathcart

Cathcart is one of the older corners of the south side, with the White Cart Water running through it and Linn Park on its doorstep. It has grown in stages over well over a century, and its heating systems are just as varied as its streets. That is exactly the kind of area where experience counts.

David Crombie has plenty of it. He has worked in gas and heating for over 27 years, including 20 with British Gas, and he now runs Crombie Gas as a family business from Uddingston. He made the move to self-employment so that the people he works for get a personal, unhurried service, and that is why most of our work comes from returning customers and word of mouth.

Every job starts the same way: David looks properly, explains what is going on and prices it, parts and labour, before he picks up a tool. Repair is always considered first. If replacing the boiler really is the better option, he will tell you plainly and leave the decision with you.

We are Gas Safe registered, number 540372, and open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. Cathcart is usually 20 to 25 minutes from us.

Areas of Cathcart we cover

We cover Cathcart from the old village near the river and Linn Park, along Holmlea Road and Clarkston Road, and across to Muirend and the streets around Netherlee Road. We also work in Merrylee and up towards Battlefield, where Cathcart meets Langside. Homes on the Glasgow side of the boundary and those just over it in East Renfrewshire are equally welcome, since David regularly works on both sides of the line around here.

A mixed housing stock along the White Cart

Cathcart grew up as a village around the river and then filled out after the railway arrived on the Cathcart Circle. The result is a genuine mix: sandstone tenements nearer Battlefield and the main roads, Victorian and Edwardian villas, interwar semis and bungalows towards Muirend, and newer flats on infill sites.

Because of that, there is no single typical Cathcart boiler. Upper-floor tenement flats tend to run compact combis with tight flue routes. The villas and larger semis often have big cast iron or older steel radiators and long pipe runs, so they need a boiler with the output to match and a system that is kept clean. Interwar houses frequently still have parts of an older gravity or open-vented system that has been extended piece by piece. David takes the time to understand which you have before he recommends anything.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Cathcart: your questions

My Cathcart villa has huge old radiators. Do they need replacing with a new boiler?

Not always. Large older radiators can work perfectly well with a modern boiler, provided the system is clean and the boiler has enough output. David will check their condition and how well they heat up, and only suggest changing them if there is a real benefit. A system clean is often the more sensible first step.

Do you cover Muirend and the East Renfrewshire side of the river?

Yes. Muirend, Merrylee and the streets around Netherlee Road are all part of our Cathcart area, and we also work across the boundary into East Renfrewshire. The council line makes no difference to the service or the way we price work.

Why does my boiler struggle on the coldest days?

There are a few usual suspects: a boiler that is undersized for the house, sludge reducing flow through the radiators, or a condensate pipe outside that has frozen and shut the boiler down. David will work out which applies to your home and explain the fix, with a price, before doing any work.

Can you service a boiler fitted by another company?

Of course. We service Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers regardless of who installed them. Once we have serviced it, we can add you to our yearly reminders so the next one is not forgotten. If the paperwork from the original installer has gone missing, that is no problem either.
