Gas engineer in Pollokshields
Heating a large Victorian villa on a Pollokshields avenue is a very different job from looking after a combi in a tenement flat a few streets east. Both are common here, and both deserve an engineer who understands old buildings and takes the time to get things right.
At Crombie Gas that engineer is David Crombie. He has more than 27 years in gas and heating behind him, 20 of them spent with British Gas, and he now runs our family business from Uddingston, around 20 minutes away. He went independent to give people the personal service he felt they deserved, and most of our work comes from repeat customers and recommendations.
His approach is straightforward. He assesses the system, explains what he has found and gives you a price for parts and labour before starting. On older properties especially, he will always look at repairing what is there before suggesting a replacement, and he will tell you honestly when a new boiler is the better choice.
We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and work seven days, 8am to 8pm, across both halves of Pollokshields.
Areas of Pollokshields we cover
We cover both sides of Pollokshields: the villa streets of the west around Maxwell Park and towards Dumbreck, and the tenement grid of the east off Albert Drive and Shields Road. Nithsdale Road, Fotheringay Road and the surrounding avenues are all part of our area. If your home is in G41, from a basement flat in a big sandstone block to a detached house with its own drive, David can look after the heating.

What we do in Pollokshields
New boilers in Pollokshields
Pollokshields homes often need more than a basic combi. David works out the real heat and hot water demand first, then recommends a combi, system or regular boiler to match. Our accreditation as a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in Pollokshields also lets us register qualifying Worcester boilers for a longer manufacturer guarantee.

Bigger systems benefit from regular attention. Manufacturers generally expect a yearly service for the warranty to stand, so we keep your date on file and get in touch when it comes round. David also keeps an eye on cylinder controls, pressure and signs of sludge in older pipework.

Uneven heat across a large house, a cylinder that will not heat or a boiler that cuts out under load: David tracks down the cause methodically and prices the repair before starting. He works on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers.

Many tenement flats in East Pollokshields are let, and some larger villas are divided into flats. Each gas installation needs a safety check every 12 months. We carry it out, issue the CP12 and help you keep on top of renewal dates across properties.
More about landlord gas safety certificatesBig villas, fine tenements and serious heat demand
Pollokshields was laid out from the mid 1800s on land owned by the Stirling Maxwell family, and it is now a conservation area. The west side is mostly substantial villas on tree-lined avenues, while the east is built up with three-storey sandstone tenements, some of them among the finest in the city.
Those buildings ask a lot of a heating system. A large villa with high ceilings, many rooms and several bathrooms has a heat and hot water demand that a standard combi often cannot meet, so a system boiler with a stored hot water cylinder is frequently the better fit. Long pipe runs and old radiators gather sludge, which hurts efficiency. In the tenements the challenge reverses: a generous flat but limited space for the boiler and careful flue planning. David sizes every installation to the actual building.
I found Crombie gas by chance when I needed my boiler replaced and it was a lucky find. David is the most reliable, efficient and skilled gas engineer I have experienced. I have recommend Crombie Gas to family and friends who have also been delighted. David operates with high integrity and only quotes for work that is required and gives competitively priced options.
Gas engineer in Pollokshields: your questions
Is a combi boiler big enough for a Pollokshields villa?
Often not. A combi heats water on demand, so in a large house with two or three bathrooms in use at once it can struggle. A system boiler with a hot water cylinder usually handles that better. David will look at the size of the house and how you use it before recommending either.
We live in a conservation area. Does that affect where a new flue can go?
It can. Gas safety rules set where a flue may terminate, and in a conservation area the look of a front elevation can matter too, so it is worth checking with the council if a new flue would be visible from the street. Where possible David keeps flues to the rear or side and discusses the options with you first.
The radiators at the top of our house never get properly hot. What can be done?
In big older houses this is often down to sludge, air, an undersized pump or radiators that have never been balanced. David will check the system, explain what is causing it and price the fix, which might be as simple as balancing or a system clean rather than new equipment.
Do you work in the tenements in East Pollokshields as well as the villas?
Yes, both. The tenement flats of East Pollokshields around Albert Drive are a big part of our work here, alongside the villas in the west. The approach is the same: honest advice and a clear price before any work begins.
