Gas engineer in Bishopbriggs

David Crombie has been working on gas boilers and heating systems for more than 27 years. Twenty of those were spent with British Gas, which gave him a thorough grounding in just about every type of system you will find in a Scottish home. He set up Crombie Gas so he could offer something more personal: the same engineer every time, plain advice and no pressure to buy.

Bishopbriggs is further from our Uddingston base than some of our areas, typically a 20 to 25 minute drive outside rush hour, but it is a part of greater Glasgow we are glad to cover. Like everywhere we work, a good share of our customers come through a friend or relative who already uses us, and that kind of recommendation means a lot to a family-run business.

On every job we work the same way. We look at repair before replacement, give you a full price for parts and labour before starting, and explain what we find in plain terms. We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer for Bishopbriggs and the G64 area, and we also work on Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers. You can reach us 7 days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Local homes

Victorian villas and post-war private estates

Bishopbriggs started as a village on the old road to Kirkintilloch, and from the 1850s local landowners feued ground west of Kirkintilloch Road and Springfield Road for villas near the new railway station. Between the wars a garden suburb went up on the former Kenmure estate. The biggest change came in the 1950s and 1960s, when private housing spread over farmland at Woodhill, Cadder and Balmuildy and the town grew several times over.

That leaves a lot of post-war semi-detached and detached houses, many now on their second or third boiler, and some still running older open-vented systems with a cylinder and a tank in the loft. Whether to keep that set-up or move to a combi depends on the house and your hot water needs. The older villas have large rooms and long pipe runs, which call for careful boiler sizing and well-balanced radiators.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Bishopbriggs: your questions

Bishopbriggs is quite a drive from Uddingston. Do you really cover it?

Yes. Outside rush hour it usually takes us 20 to 25 minutes, and we have customers across G64. It is a longer run than our nearest areas, so we try to arrange visits at a time that works well for both of us. Tell us where you are and what the problem is, and we will be straight with you about when we can come.

Should I swap my hot water cylinder for a combi?

Not always. A combi saves space and heats water on demand, which suits many smaller households. A busy home with two bathrooms may be better off with stored hot water from a cylinder, and a combi needs good mains water pressure to perform well. David will check your water flow and how you use hot water before giving an honest recommendation.

Do you work on the older villas near Kirkintilloch Road?

Yes. Victorian villas bring big rooms, solid walls and often long, much altered pipe runs. David will look at the whole system, not just the boiler, checking radiator outputs, controls and the condition of the pipework before recommending any changes. Sometimes better controls and proper balancing make a bigger difference than a new boiler.

Will you remind me when my boiler service is due?

Yes. Every customer who has their boiler serviced with us gets a yearly reminder. Most manufacturers require an annual service to keep the warranty valid, so it is worth staying on top of. The reminder simply makes it easy to book in again at a time that suits you, with no obligation.
