Gas engineer in Wishaw

A boiler that gives up on a weeknight in Coltness, or a radiator that will not heat in a flat off Main Street, needs someone who will answer the phone and tell you straight what is wrong. That has been David Crombie's job for more than 27 years, first with British Gas for two decades and now under his own family name.

Crombie Gas is based in Uddingston, about 20 minutes from Wishaw, and we cover the whole ML2 area, from Cambusnethan and Pather to Craigneuk, Netherton and Overtown. We are Gas Safe registered under number 540372, we work on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers, and we are open seven days a week between 8am and 8pm.

The way we work is simple. David diagnoses the fault, gives you a price for parts and labour, and only then gets started. If the boiler can be fixed for a sensible cost, he fixes it. Most of our work comes from people who called us once and kept our number, or were handed it by a neighbour, and we would like to keep it that way.

Areas of Wishaw we cover

Our Wishaw visits take us right across ML2. Coltness, the largest suburb, and Cambusnethan account for a big share of the town's homes, and we also cover Pather, Waterloo, Greenhead and Wishawhill. Over the railway lines we work in Craigneuk, Netherton and Gowkthrapple, and we go on to Overtown, Newmains and Morningside as well. If you are not sure whether your street is covered, give us a call and ask.

Local homes

From Victorian streets to Coltness cottage flats

Wishaw became a burgh in 1855 and grew with mining and steel, so the streets close to Main Street still have stone tenements and terraces from that period. Coltness was laid out in the 1950s by the old burgh council to ease a housing shortage, with a mix of houses and low-density flats set among open green space. Gowkthrapple's tower blocks are now being demolished and replaced with low-rise homes, while estates such as Ravenwood show the newer side of the town.

Older open-vented systems, with a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in a cupboard, are still common in the post-war houses and cottage flats. Converting to a combi frees up space and gets rid of the tank, but on a large or tired system it is not always the right call, and the pipework has to be up to the job. David will look at the radiators, pipe sizes and water pressure before recommending either route.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Wishaw: your questions

Do you cover Craigneuk and Netherton as well as Wishaw itself?

Yes. Both sit on the other side of the railway lines from the town centre, but they are part of our normal Wishaw area, along with Gowkthrapple, Pather, Coltness and Cambusnethan. We also travel to Overtown, Newmains and Morningside. From Uddingston the drive is usually about 20 minutes off-peak.

Should I swap my old tank-fed system for a combi?

It depends on the house. A combi suits most flats and smaller houses with one bathroom, and it frees up the loft and the airing cupboard. Homes with two bathrooms or weak mains pressure can be better served by a system boiler and cylinder. David will check your water flow and explain which option makes sense for you.

Is it worth servicing an older boiler every year?

We think so. An older boiler is more likely to have worn seals, a dirty heat exchanger or a poor flame, and a yearly service is when those things get spotted. It also gives David the chance to tell you honestly how much life the boiler has left, so a replacement never comes as a surprise.

My upstairs radiators stay cold. Is that a boiler fault?

Not always. In older Wishaw houses it is often air in the system, sludge settling in the radiators, or a pump struggling with long pipe runs. David will check the boiler first, then the rest of the system, and explain what he finds. Bleeding and balancing may be all it needs, and anything bigger is priced before he starts.
