Gas engineer in Motherwell

Motherwell has changed a great deal since the Ravenscraig cooling towers came down, and the way the town heats its homes has changed with it. In one street you will find stone tenements from the years when steel was the biggest employer in town. A short drive away there are new homes on the old steelworks site with boilers still under their first warranty. David Crombie has worked on both kinds of house for the best part of three decades.

Crombie Gas is a family-run business based just up the road in Uddingston. David spent 20 years as an engineer with British Gas before going self-employed, and he now has more than 27 years in gas and heating behind him. He went out on his own so that customers would deal with the same person every time, and most of our work now comes from repeat customers and the people they pass our number to.

When we come out, David looks at the boiler, explains what he has found in plain terms and prices the job, parts and labour, before any work starts. If a repair makes sense, that is what we recommend. Replacement only comes up when it is genuinely the better option. We are Gas Safe registered (number 540372) and open seven days a week, 8am to 8pm.

Areas of Motherwell we cover

We cover the whole of Motherwell. That includes Airbles and the streets around Fir Park, Knowetop, Glencairn and North Lodge, Forgewood and Muirhouse, and Jerviston on the far side of the South Calder Water. Ravenscraig is a growing part of the town as new housing fills the former steelworks site, and we are also happy to travel on to Carfin, Newarthill and the other villages that share the ML1 postcode. From our base in Uddingston, most of Motherwell is 10 to 15 minutes away.

Local homes

Tenements, council estates and the new Ravenscraig

Motherwell grew fast in the steel years, and its older housing shows it: sandstone tenements and terraces around the town centre, then large council estates such as Forgewood and Muirhouse built across the middle of the last century. In a tenement flat the boiler position is often limited by where a flue can legally exit, so a replacement is partly a question of routing, not just choosing a model. Many ex-council houses have long since moved to a combi, but plenty still run original pipework that has seen two or three boilers come and go.

Ravenscraig is a different picture. The homes built on the former steelworks site are modern, well insulated and usually fitted with a condensing combi or, in larger houses, a system boiler with an unvented hot water cylinder. Those boilers need a service every year to keep the manufacturer's warranty valid, and unvented cylinders need their own regular check as well.

Brilliant service.

Our boiler broke down. Phoned David in the morning and boiler repaired in afternoon. Priced the job for parts and labour before starting. Good price. The next week we had no hot water. A different problem than before. Again David came out and told us what was wrong. Priced the part and labour and gave us a date for the job. Everything sorted!

Questions

Gas engineer in Motherwell: your questions

Do you work on new-build boilers at Ravenscraig?

Yes. Many Ravenscraig homes still have the boiler the developer fitted, and the manufacturer's warranty usually depends on a yearly service by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We service Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera boilers and send you a reminder each year, so the warranty is not lost by accident.

My tenement flat boiler is old. Can the new one go in the same spot?

Often it can, but not always. Flue rules about distances from windows, doors and neighbouring properties have tightened over the years, so a flue that was acceptable decades ago may not be today. David will look at the existing position, explain the options and price the full job, including any flue work, before you decide.

How far is Motherwell from you?

We are based in Uddingston, so most of Motherwell is around 10 to 15 minutes away off-peak. That covers the town centre, Airbles, Forgewood, Muirhouse, North Lodge and Ravenscraig, as well as Carfin and Newarthill. We work seven days a week from 8am to 8pm.

Will you try to sell me a new boiler?

No. David spent 20 years with British Gas and went self-employed to give a more personal service, and honest advice is part of that. If your boiler can be repaired sensibly, he will say so and price the repair. If it is genuinely past it, he will explain why and leave the decision with you.
