Gas engineer in Glasgow
Glasgow is a city of flats. Most of the homes we work in across the east end, the south side and the centre sit in sandstone tenements, interwar cottage flats or postwar blocks, and each type brings its own puzzles when it comes to boilers, flues and pipework. Crombie Gas is a family-run firm based in Uddingston, on the south-east edge of the city, and David Crombie has been working on heating systems in and around Glasgow for more than 27 years.
Twenty of those years were spent with British Gas. David went self-employed because he wanted to give people a more personal service: the same engineer every time, a straight answer about what is wrong, and a price for parts and labour agreed before any work begins. Most of our work now comes from repeat customers and from people they have passed our number on to.
We are Gas Safe registered (540372) and a Worcester Bosch accredited installer in Glasgow, so we can offer extended manufacturer guarantees on eligible Worcester boilers. We also fit, service and repair Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera. If something can sensibly be repaired, we will repair it before we ever talk about a new boiler, and there is no sales pitch. We are open seven days a week, from 8am to 8pm.
Areas of Glasgow we cover
Coming from Uddingston, the east end is closest: Tollcross, Shettleston, Parkhead and Dennistoun are a short run in along London Road and Tollcross Road. Heading south of the river, we cover Kings Park, Cathcart, Battlefield and Shawlands, along with the Gorbals and Bridgeton nearer the centre. We also take on work in the city centre and the Merchant City, and in the West End and the north of the city for customers who already know us. If your street is not mentioned, just ask, because there is a good chance we already work nearby.

What we do in Glasgow
New boilers in Glasgow
When a boiler genuinely needs replacing, David looks at where it sits, how the flue can leave the building and what output the flat or house actually needs. In Glasgow that often means moving a boiler out of an awkward cupboard, or swapping an old tank-fed system for a combi that frees up space.

An annual service keeps the boiler running safely and keeps the manufacturer's warranty valid, so we send a reminder each year when yours is due. David checks the burner, seals, flue and condensate route, tests the gas pressure and combustion, then tells you plainly about anything worth keeping an eye on.

No heat, no hot water, low pressure or a fault code on the display: David works through the problem methodically and prices the repair, parts and labour, before he starts. With long experience on Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Vokera, the aim is always to fix what you have before replacement is mentioned.

Glasgow has a big private rented sector, and every let property with gas appliances needs a gas safety check every year under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. We carry out the check, issue the CP12 record, and are happy to arrange access directly with tenants or through your letting agent.
More about landlord gas safety certificatesTenements, cottage flats and the boilers inside them
A large share of Glasgow homes are flats in sandstone tenements built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In these buildings the boiler is often tucked into a hall press or kitchen cupboard well away from an outside wall, so the flue has to travel through the flat before it can leave the building. Routes like that need careful planning, proper support and access for inspection, and in a factored close, any change to the outside of the building usually needs the other owners on board.
Away from the tenements, the interwar cottage flats and four-in-a-block homes found in schemes like Carntyne often still have older open-vented systems fed from a cold water tank, and some still have a back boiler behind the fire. Converting those to a modern combi or system boiler is very common work for us. Every winter we also meet condensate pipes that run outside and freeze, which stops a condensing boiler in its tracks; rerouting or upsizing the pipe is usually a straightforward fix.
Great service!
We struggled to find a gas engineer to fix our problems for a couple of months, everyone had issues with parts etc etc. Within hours David came out and fixed all the problems for 10% price quoted by two other engineers. We were very impressed but ultimately David just knows what hes doing. 10/10
Gas engineer in Glasgow: your questions
Do you cover the whole of Glasgow?
We cover most of the east end, the south side and the city centre, and we take on work in the West End and the north of the city for existing customers. Because we are based in Uddingston, the east end and the south-east are closest to us. If you are unsure whether we reach your street, call and ask and David will tell you honestly.
Can a new boiler go in a different place in a tenement flat?
Often, yes, but it depends on where the flue can get out. In a tenement the flue usually has to leave through an outside wall, ideally at the back of the building, and some positions are ruled out by windows, the close or neighbouring flats. David will look at the options on a visit and explain what is realistic before you commit to anything.
Do I need to tell my factor before a new boiler goes in?
If the work changes the outside of the building, such as a new flue terminal on the stonework, it is sensible to check your title deeds and speak to your factor first, and extra planning rules can apply in conservation areas. A like-for-like swap using the existing flue position usually involves far less. We will explain exactly what the job involves so you know what to check.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm with a gas boiler in Scotland?
Yes. Since February 2022, Scottish law has required every home, whatever the tenure, to have a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance such as a gas boiler, and in any room a flue passes through. Cookers are the exception. If your alarm is missing or past its expiry date, we will point it out during a service or installation.
